Humpback whales migrate to the Hawaiian Islands during the winter months, November-May.
To Hawaiians, the whale represents “Kanaloa” – the god of animals in the ocean.
They travel, round trip, a distance of approximately 4,000 miles, one of the longest migration distances of any animal species. While in Hawaii, 6-8 weeks, they do not feed but rely on stored energy. They devote most of their time to mating and giving birth.
Humpback whales can live 95 years and, in their winter home, eat anywhere from 2,000 – 9,000 pounds of fish and krill each day.
